Part museum and part gift shop, it keeps the spirit of the Mother Road alive, and it's a must-visit next time you're in the Kingman area. When you visit the Cool Springs Station in Golden Valley, you can still experience the heyday of Route 66.

Located about 20 miles west of Kingman, this historic gas station dates to the mid-1920s. It was one of the only places to stop along this stretch of the Mother Road, so it was quite popular among weary travelers.

Cool Springs was originally a restaurant, and the 1930s saw the addition of eight on-site cabins. The chicken dinners were practically world-famous, along with the breathtaking views of the Black Mountains that customers could enjoy while they ate.

Today, the restaurant and cabins are no more, but Cool Springs still lives on (after a nearly 40-year closure). It now serves as a gift shop and museum filled with Route 66 souvenirs and authentic memorabilia.

You'll see everything from old license plates to motor oil once used to service cars at the station.

There is also plenty of merchandise that isn't specific to Route 66 itself, but rather the Americana era as a whole.

Handmade jewelry and other one-of-a-kind items round out the selection, leaving it nearly impossible to walk away empty-handed.

Don't forget to check out the exact replica of the old café - while it isn't functional, it's still such a charming blast from the past.

Products are typically also for sale outside, including unique gemstones harvested from the surrounding area.

Golden Valley is leading the charge for affordable housing in the Twin Cities suburbs. Now, funding from the state is helping the city to make that happen.

“Housing should be seen as a basic human right and we have an obligation in humanity to provide that,” said Alma Flores, community development director in Golden Valley.

Flores said the city’s Home Ownership Program for Equity, or HOPE, is making that option more affordable for some families.

“We only have, at this time, under 8 percent that we could say is affordable to people who earn that area median income,” Flores said.

To boost the affordability numbers in Golden Valley, 11 city-owned land plots are being used to build single-family homes.

Those homes include single-family houses, duplexes and rowhomes. Flores said four sites were funded through round one. Habitat for Humanity already began constructing one on Douglas Drive.

The additional seven still sought funding until recently.

Golden Valley was one of the projects selected for the state’s $348 million. A release from the state said the funding will create and preserve 4,720 homes across the state.

“This proposal really provides a range of housing options to meet the needs of different residents,” said Kayla Schuchman, assistant commissioner for single family housing at Minnesota Housing.

Her department allocated $3.5 million in grants and loans to the city of Golden Valley. That money, along with $945,000 from the Metropolitan Council, will help fund a number of the affordable rowhomes and duplexes.

“This year, we were able to really go big in what we selected through the process,” Schuchman said. “We awarded multiple times of what we would award in a given year.”

She said Minnesota has one of the largest homeownership gaps in the country.

“Homeownership of white households in the state of Minnesota far outpaces the rate of homeownership in our households of color,” Schuchman said.

That gap was about a 50 percent difference in 2022.

This is a first step toward a more equal market in Golden Valley as plots of land become places to stay.

“This will serve residents, you know, up front when the houses are built, and overtime as the units turn over,” Schuchman said.

The sheriff's office said James Douglas McDaniel was hit by a vehicle on Jan. 2 at the corner of Chino Drive and Adobe Road.

MOHAVE COUNTY, Ariz. — The Mohave County Sheriff's Office is looking for the driver responsible for a hit-and-run crash that left a man dead in Golden Valley earlier this week.

The sheriff's office said 69-year-old James Douglas McDaniel, of Golden Valley, was hit by a vehicle at around 7:40 p.m. on Jan. 2, at the corner of Chino Drive and Adobe Road.

The responding officers arrived to find McDaniel lying in the roadway. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

A description of the vehicle involved is unavailable.

A reward of up to $1,500 is being offered for information leading to the identification of the vehicle and driver involved in this incident.

Summary

In October 2021, skeletal remains were discovered by hikers in a remote desert area near Pioneer Drive and Laguna Road in Golden Valley, Arizona. Golden Valley is situated in the Sacramento Valley, approximately ten miles from Kingman, Arizona in Mohave County. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and confirmed that the remains were human. The skeletal remains were transferred to the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation. While the biological sex of the individual was determined to be male, due to the condition of the remains, other identifying characteristics such as height, weight, and ethnicity could not be determined. In 2022, details of the unidentified person case were entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) as UP89640. There were few leads to work from, and despite investigators’ efforts, the man could not be identified.

In March 2023, Detectives with Mohave County Sheriff Office's Special Investigations Unit (SIU), as part of an ongoing collaboration with Othram, requested assistance in identifying the unknown man. Skeletal remains were sent to Othram's laboratory in The Woodlands, Texas. Othram scientists developed a suitable DNA extract from the skeletal remains and then used Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing® to build a comprehensive DNA profile. Othram’s in-house genealogy team worked with the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) at the Mohave County Sheriff's Office to generate new investigative leads in the case.

A follow-up investigation ultimately led to the identification of the unknown man. He is now identified as 60-year-old Christopher Canning of Golden Valley, Arizona. Canning was reported missing by a family member on May 15, 2021, five months prior to his remains being discovered. Canning’s official cause of death is undetermined; however, foul play is not suspected.

The costs associated with Othram's testing were generously funded by Project Grace, a philanthropic initiative with a goal to help clear backlogs of unsolved cases. Othram is grateful for the funding support for this case and several other Mohave County cases recently worked by Othram including the identifications of Jordan Victor Carvalho and Brandon Ray Parlanti.
