ABC15 is visiting various communities in Arizona to hear what they have to say ahead of the 2024 Presidential election. The first stop is in Kingman, Arizona.

KINGMAN, AZ — In northern Arizona, along historic Route 66 is the City of Kingman.

"This town really is a country town, a cattleman's town," said long-time resident Sharlene Sammeli.

The city is about three hours from the Valley and less than two hours from Las Vegas, Nevada.

"You can go almost anywhere from here in just a few hours," said Becky Fawson the President and CEO of the Kingman Area Chamber of Commerce.

It's known to many as a stop on the way to their final destination.

"I hear it all the time," said Fawson. "Oh, I've been through there on my way to Vegas."

Every day Route 66 brings travelers from Arizona and all around the world right to the city.

"There is so much nostalgia that goes along with it, and I think that really has come back since COVID," said Fawson.

Over decades the railroad, mining, ranching, and manufacturing were the draw for people to make Kingman home.

"It's a very friendly, populated town," said Sammeli. "The biggest asset in my eyes, the people."

Sammeli helps run a store called Heard It Through the Grapevine, located on Beale Street. Years ago, it was the city's main street.

"We have a little bit of everything," said Sammeli.

The store sells furniture, paintings, signs, and food all from a small house built over a century ago. Since the 1960s, Sammeli has been watching the city change.

"I think the change maker is when Duval Mine closed because it employed a lot of people," said Sammeli. "And when it closed a lot of people were out of work, and they had to move."

But just a few miles away, mining is still happening in Kingman. People ABC15 spoke with said interest is returning to the overall mining industry.

"There's no school in the world that teaches what we do," said Marty Colbaugh, who runs Kingman Turquoise.

He is the third generation in his family running the business, and his son will mark the fourth.

"Now what we've evolved into is, I believe, we're the only company that I know of in the world that we actually mine the turquoise," said Colbaugh. "We actually get it brought in, processed, and develop it all the way through."

He told ABC15 Kingman Turquoise does have a lot of local customers, but their turquoise is used and purchased all over the world.

"We get people coming in from all over the southwest on a regular basis because they use our product in making their jewelry," said Colbaugh.

As he prepares the next generation to one day take over, he and others see opportunity for industry and major interest in the area.

"So, I guess the things you want to see is the right kind of growth," said Colbaugh.

Manufacturing and distribution are also big employers in Kingman. Business owners and locals work together to help each other succeed.

ABC15 asked what issues or concerns impact the people in Kingman.

"The price of groceries," said Sammeli. "The price of gasoline."

She told ABC15 she knows local families where parents need more than one job. Another concern, even in northern Arizona, is the border.

"One hundred percent, it's a concern for everyone in the country really," said Colbaugh.

As the community moves forward, with change inevitable, people hope one thing stays the same.

"I hope Kingman keeps its small-town feel no matter how big we get," said Sammeli.

If you're among those who seek out hair-raising experiences for the fun of it, then head to Kingman to the base of Luana's Canyon, more commonly referred to as Slaughterhouse Canyon, Arizona.

There's a longstanding legend that surrounds this eerie canyon and, if the story behind it is true (which can't be proven), it's horrific, tragic, and just plain sad. Legend has it that during the 1800s, a family lived down in the bottoms of Slaughterhouse Canyon. You can probably guess the first part of this tragic story: one time he left, and he never returned. Meanwhile, his wife and children were left alone in the canyon and they slowly began to starve.

Times were hard and the father would regularly leave for weeks at a time in search of food, and possibly even gold; anything to keep the family fed and clothed.

As with any canyon, if you yell loud enough, the echo will eventually make its way right back to you; and as the family began to wither away, their screams of starvation would circulate all around the canyon. Eventually (as the legend goes... ) the mother couldn't bear to hear her children's painful screams; and so she murdered them and then took her own life. Visitors to Slaughterhouse Canyon have reported feeling the anguish that still permeates the air. And on evenings and nights when the air is still and thick, it's reported that you can hear the screams of the kids and of the mother as she made the tragic decision to end their suffering. This is among the most haunted places in Arizona.

The Element Fire experienced outflow winds last evening that pushed the fire north into the Mount Tipton Wilderness. Firefighters will evaluate the full impact from the passing storm and rain. Fire crews continue to be deployed to the most active area on the northwest side of the fire to improve containment and slow its progression to the north.Fire Managers ask the public to avoid the northwest area of the fire perimeter around Big Wash Road. Fire Managers ask the public to avoid the northwest area of the fire perimeter around Big Wash Road. Use caution on Highway 93 and Stockton Hill Road going north of Kingman. Smoke will be visible throughout the day. Firefighters continue with structure protection in the Vock Canyon area as well as residences west of Stockton Hill Road.

Location: About 4 miles east of Chloride and About 12 miles north of Kingman, west of Stockton Hill Road.

Jurisdiction: Kingman Field Office, Bureau of Land Management

Fire Size: 5,364 acres.

Containment: 5%

Cause: Lightning/Natural

Fuels: Lower Elevation-Grass/Brush; Higher Elevation-Chaparral/Pinyon Juniper.

Structures: Vock Canyon and homes west of Stockton Hill Road between milepost 18-23 currently in “SET” status.

Closures: Big Wash Road from the water tank junction (CM1470) to the Cherum Peak Trailhead; CM1364 to Big Wash Road; Packsaddle Campground; Windy Point Campground; and Cherum Peak Trailhead.

Fire Resources: 2 water tenders, 6 engines, 2 Interagency Hotshot Crews, 2 Department of Corrections crews, 1 suppression module crew, 2 helicopters, 145 total personnel.

Safety: No injuries reported. Fire managers are asking for the public’s assistance by avoiding the area to allow crews and resources to access and mitigate the fire.

Wildfires are a no drone zone. Flying drones near wildfires is dangerous for pilots and firefighters and can bring wildfire suppression efforts to a halt. If you fly, we can’t.
