Cold, blustery winds will combine with areas of heavy snow to create miserable winter conditions across a large swath of the Great Lakes, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic through Thursday.

An Arctic storm system will pass through the Great Lakes and Northeast over the next two days, packing plenty of cold air with it. This cold air will be driven by strong winds, with widespread gusts of 40-50 mph expected as the cold front moves across each region. Wind Advisories can be found from the northern Plains and Upper Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England.

The disturbance will also have a good amount of moisture with it, allowing for widespread snowfall from the Great Lakes to much of the northeastern U.S. The highest totals will be downwind of the Great Lakes, where additional moisture will get picked up along the way. These areas are forecast to see 8 to 14 inches of snow through Thursday evening, with locally higher amounts of 14 to 18 inches.

Parts of far northern New England will also see snow amounts reaching 4 to 10 inches over the next two days, with some of the higher mountaintops getting up to 10 to 16 inches. The central Appalachians from Pennsylvania to West Virginia wil also see 4 to 10 inches of fresh snow.

More widespread snowfall of 2 to 8 inches will be found from far northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin through southeastern Michigan, the rest of Upstate New York, western and central Massachusetts, and the lower elevations of northern New England.

Internationally known artist Roy Purcell first painted the "The Journey" in 1966 and then repainted it at the town's invitation in 2006. If the twisted majesty of the Joshua Forest Scenic Road (the stretch of U.S. 93 south of Wikieup) piqued your interest, visit Dolan Springs, where volunteers have carved out a series of loop trails through a Joshua tree forest.

About 32 miles north of Kingman, at mile marker 42, turn right on Pearce Ferry Road and go 5 miles. Follow the hiking-trail signs to three interconnected loops of 1, 2 and 2.5 miles in length, on the lower slopes of the Cerbats. Hiking trail maps are available at the chamber of commerce, 16154 Pearce Ferry Road.

White Hills

Stop at Rosie's Den and you might not need to push on to Vegas. This weathered outpost is considered lucky by Powerball players and does a brisk business in lottery-ticket sales. An impressive array of certificates are displayed on the walls verifying big-money winning tickets sold here, including one that paid $8.3 million in 1996.
